In the North Georgia mountains, color typically peaks between October 15 and 25, with good color running from early October into the first week of November. Foliage changes from the top of the mountains down and from higher elevations first — so the highest peaks (like Brasstown Bald and the Cohuttas) turn earliest, and the valleys around Ellijay follow a week or so later.

The best week to book

For the highest odds of full, vibrant color, aim for the third week of October. It’s the sweet spot — and it’s also the busiest, so weekends sell out first. If your dates are flexible, mid-week stays that week are pure magic (and quieter).

• Book early. Fall weekends are the most in-demand of the entire year in Ellijay.
• Go higher for earlier color. Drive up in elevation for peak color a little ahead of the valleys.
